Cherai Beach, Kerala

Cherai beach is located around 25 km from Cochin (Kochi) on the western coast of Vypin island. From Fort Kochi there is regular boat service to Vypin island. Cherai beach is one of the best long pristine white sand beach around Kochi.

I visited there in the afternoon in the month of May. It was quite sunny. I did not take bath but it should be fun to take bath there. I was told the Tsunami of 2004 left gushing sea water in the village. So now there stand a huge concrete wall protecting from sea surge. The beach is clean and there are a few shops where you can buy snacks, cold drinks and water. A tour of the Cherai lagoon would be a beautiful experience. The areas around Cherai beach is used mainly for coconut plantation, Shrimp cultivation and salt extraction.

One should see Break-water Point. This is where river Periyar empties into the Arabian sea. Little away from the main beach is lake Poyil. Other things to see are Pallipuram church, Portuguese For built in 1503, backwaters and Varaha Temple.

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (30 km) and the nearest railway station is at Aluva (20 km). If you would like to stay here, there are some hotels/resorts and home stay options.
