Kodagu District, Karnataka

Location: Kodagu is located on the eastern slopes of western ghat and shares border with Hassan district in the north, Kannur district of Kerela to the south-west, Wayanad district of Kerela in the South, Daskhina Kannada to the north-west and Mysore district in the east.

District Headquarter: Madikeri

Distance: Madikeri is around 260 km from Bangalore, 120 km from Mysore, 120 km from Mangalore and 135 km from Hassan

Journey time: Around 8 hours from Bangalore by bus. 2 – 2 and half hrs from Mangalore and Mysore.

How to reach there: In Kodagu or Coorg district there is no train connectivity or airport. One can reach there by KSRTC buses from Bangalore, Mangalore, Mysore, Hassan etc.

Route: Bangalore – Mysore road – Srirangapatna bypass – Hunsur – PeriyapatnaKushalnagar – Madikeri.

Language spoken: Coorgi, kannadaHindi and English understood to an extent

Coorg is located on a elevated plateau around 3740 ft above sea level. The earliest information is available is from the Hoysala rule. Then it was rules by Vijayanagar kings and the Chengalvas. Then it came under Woderyars of Mysore and Tipu Sultan for sometime. The Birtish finnaly annexed Coorg in 1834 after removing Haleri king Chikkaveerarajendra. Coorg had a state status during Birtish rule in India. After re-organization of states Coorg became a district of Karnataka state.

1. Abbey falls: A small falls inside a coffee estate around 9 km from Madikeri town.

2. Bhagamandala: Sangam of three rivers viz. Kaveri, kanneri and the mythical river sujoythi.

3. Talacauvery: Origin of river Cauvery. Here one can also climb Bramhagiri hill.

4. Raja’s seat: At Raja’s seat one can see flower show and Bird’s eye view of the country side.

7. Coorg fort and Palace: A part now features the district jail and other servers as offices.

Irupu Falls: Irupu falls is one of the most popular tourist destination. It is located around 48 km from Virajpet on the way to Nagarhole. On the way on can also find Rameshwara Temple, a form of Shiva on the bank of river Lakshmana Tirtha.

Igguthappadevara betta:

Tadiandamol: It is the highest peak in Coorg district standing 5,724 ft high. It is located around 40 km from Madikeri near to Nalknad Palace.

The Pushpagiri or Subramanya hill: It is a popular trekking destination. The hill stand around 5,626 ft high amid dense forest around 36 kms from Somwarpet and 1.5 km from Kumaralli. It gives a panoramic view of view of Kodagu, Hassan, Mysore and Dakshina Kannada.
